Installing your Door
For best results, apply any finishing coats or stain to the door while it is laying flat ... and don't forget to treat the hinge cut-outs and lock plate openings. It is advisable to finish the door before it is exposed to the weather. Apply equal quantities of the paint or stain to each side of the door taking care to pay particular attention to the edges, to any areas which have been cut or drilled and including any rebate for glazing.
A door which needs reducing to fit the frame should be trimmed equally on both sides to maintain the correct balance.
Locks, latches and letterplates should be fitted before the door is hung. Locks, including mortice locks and latches should be located above or below the midrail of the door, so that performance is not adversely affected.
When fitting hinges for exterior doors, you will need 3 butt hinges of 4 inch quality brass or steel. For interior doors, use 1 pair of 3 inch hinges. Of course, if the door in question exceeds 20 kg or is to be hung between areas of contrasting humidity levels, then 3 butt hinges are needed.
